A SOCIAL NETWORK
This one-week exhibition design project was part of a course on exhibition design. The challenge: creating an exhibition frame entirely from wooden slats with the topic “forest”, everything else was up to us.
We chose mushrooms as our theme, fascinated by their hidden networks and role in the forest ecosystem. The structure is layered like forest floors, revealing what happens both above and below ground. Visitors could explore the frame from all sides, interact with the elements, and learn about mushrooms from multiple perspectives.
The goal was to make the experience engaging for different audiences, combining clear information with hands-on interaction in a way that makes learning feel natural.

UPPER LEVEL – EDIBLE OR POISONOUS?
The top layer of the frame recreates a forest floor with moss and wooden mushrooms. Here, visitors can take part in an interactive guessing game: each folding card shows two similar-looking mushrooms, one edible, one poisonous. Opening the card reveals the answer along with details about the mushroom’s appearance and structure, the season it grows in, warning signs and symptoms of poisonous varieties.

LOWER LEVEL – Hidden Network
Beneath the forest floor lies the real mushroom: a vast mycelium network stretching for kilometers, transmitting electrical signals to communicate.
We visualised this with fairy lights to symbolise the flow of signals. Attached to them are cards with short, engaging facts about the structure, function, and fascinating role of the mycelium in the forest ecosystem.

SIDE PANEL – Introduction & Facts
On each side of the frame, two large posters run from top to bottom.
The green panel introduces the exhibition’s theme, explains the mushroom guessing game, and gives a brief overview of the hidden communication network. The purple one presents five concise, general facts about mushrooms, offering visitors a quick knowledge boost alongside the interactive elements.
FLYER – Guide tO go
Visitors could take home a folded flyer. One side featured key facts about mushrooms and their hidden communication network, while the other provided a practical picking guide, including tips on safe identification, seasonal advice, and what to watch out for when collecting mushrooms in the wild.
